Pirates 5k and Game

Saturday, April 21st was a Pirates day for us. We started the day by running in our first 5k of the year: the Pirates Charities Home Run 5k. It started downtown, next to the PNC Park. The only problem, at least for us, was that the day’s high temperature of 55 was probably at 6am, and rain was coming in fast. In the chilly pre-race weather, we posed at the start line, next to the Clemente Bridge.

Janie pre-raceTim pre-raceIt was a nice, easy course that was pretty flat and ran along the river front. There were a ton of runners (over 2500), which led to a 15+ minute late start due to all the late people picking up their gear. And, of course, it started raining on us half way through the race. As the finish was getting closer, Janie caught and passed Tim, to his surprise. Right after each other, we entered the stadium in the right field corner. The finish line was in left-center field, and people could walk on the warning track around the field to cool down. It was a cool experience – too bad it was raining so we were ready to leave. Here is Janie while we were on the field – the finish line is in the background, just over her right shoulder.

Janie post-raceAfter leaving the stadium, we noticed two groups of runners merging when entering the stadium. Tim realized that we didn’t run the full route! It seems like they didn’t have a turn marked, so most people only ran 2.9 miles (we were in a large continuous stream of people). Funny. Here is the results page, which notes what happened. Someone probably got tired of the rain.

We spentĀ  the day inside, staying warm and dry. The weather report said that the rain would be gone by early evening, so we headed out for our first baseball game of the year after some Chipotle. At the park, we were bundled up to stay warm.

Bundled up before the gameOf course, it lightly rained at the start of the game, but it didn’t last too long. It sure was an appropriate night for an umbrella give-away. Here’s the first pitch.

Small crowd and umbrellas at first pitchIt was a good game – with both pitchers working quickly. And…the Pirates won, 2-0!
