Saturday night, August 6th, was the third Pirates Skyblast of the summer, featuring Train, which is fronted by a local singer from Erie, PA.
We walked to the game via the Warhol Bridge, which gave nice views back to downtown and looking down the Allegheny River.
The game moved semi-quickly for the first 6 innings or so, with the Padres building an early lead. Local boy Neil Walker had a hit.
The roving TV cameraman liked someone in our section and stood nearby filming for a few minutes. That was quite a wireless device on the camera.
Padres rookie pitcher Cory Luebke pitched a great game.
The fans always enjoy the race between the Peirogies, which occurs between innings in the middle of the game. Yellow won this time.
In the end, the Pirates continued their streak of ineptitude, losing for the 9th straight game, 13-2. After a grand slam in the 7th inning really blew the game open, it seemed to stretch out for all the fans on this warm night, waiting for the concert and fireworks display.
Finally, a little after 10:30, it was time for Train.
At the start, Train asked people to hold up their cell phones, like lighters in the past. Some did…
During and between different songs were the usual excellent fireworks. Tonight, thanks to wind blowing into the park, smoke was blowing into the stands early in the concert.
This gave some red fireworks quite a hue.
As Train ended their hit Calling All Angels, another fireworks session started.
Later, when singing Marry Me, the lead singer Pat Monahan decided to “marry all the fans” and ran a lap around the park. That was a first, at the Skyblasts, and we figured he had to be pretty tired at the end!
Train’s hit song Hey Soul Sister was pretty popular with the crowd, with many singing along.
And, the grand finale of fireworks was great. Seeing them shot off of the field is pretty cool.
