After almost 39 weeks of waiting, we were ready to meet our son. On Halloween, October 31st, 2014, Janie was checked in to UMHS to start the process of induction. Shortly before 4pm the drug was started.
That evening, Janie was happy to watch one of her favorite movies, For The Love of the Game, although it was edited.
We could see her contractions on a monitor, thanks to a sensor that Janie wore. This is the morning of the first.
We hoped that Troy would arrive before the Illinois-Ohio State football game started, but instead Janie’s water broke just as the third quarter began (10:15pm), in what was a blowout win for OSU (55-14). Tim hopes that isn’t a predictor of anything.
After two epidurals, daylight savings time in which we watched time go backwards on automated clocks, and hours of on and off pushing, a decision was made to do a c-section. Troy’s head was sideways and his hand was next to his head, preventing a normal birth. So shortly after 6am on November 2nd Janie was wheeled out of the room and at 6:40 Tim was brought into the OR where Janie was prepped.
And at 6:49am Troy Siebrand Bruns was born!
Tim got to see him first. Note his weight on the screen.
After a little bit, the three of us went to the recovery area, with Janie holding him all the way there.
Such a cute little guy!
Here’s our first family picture, which we shared online to announce his birth.
Tim’s parents were in town, so we had a nice visit with them. (Or, they were thrilled to meet Troy.)
Troy had high bilirubin levels so he got some blue-light treatment to help break it down.
Finally, after five nights at the hospital (2 before, 3 after birth), we checked out at about 9pm, ready to go home.
Jamie managed to avoid leaving in a “Michigan” wheelchair, but our stuff didn’t.
Finally, he’s in the car, sleeping soundly.
Janie was pretty happy to be leaving.
Finally at home, on the evening of the 5th, there was time for rocking in the chair that belonged to Janie’s Grandpa Troy, our son’s namesake.
More to come…
